Contains information pertaining to the following wars: World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII), Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War. General description of the collection: The Lewis B. Hershey papers include official and personal correspondence with U.S. presidents, government officials, state and local Selective Service Boards. Many documents on the Selective Service are found such as bulletins, memoranda, regulations, manuals, newsletters, court decisions, legal briefs, commentary on the draft, legislation on military affairs, statistical data on potential inductees, clippings on conscription and pamphlets and official papers. A biography (1911-1973) is included with a few papers for service in WWII There is also an oral history on his career. Most items pertain to Hershey's work. With the Selective Service in 1948 through the 1960's to 1970's. Materials relating to involvement in civil defense activities in Montgomery County, Maryland, 1953-1965 are included. There is a report of Colonel Ellsworth I. Davis, Corps Engineer of the I Corps of the removal of a minefield on "Line Golden" Korea, (January-April, 1952). Information files on the Selective Service System are arranged by subject decimal numbers which can be searched via a card index.

Lewis Blaine Hershey (September 12, 1893 – May 20, 1977) was the Director of the Selective Service System of the United States. An Indiana native, Hershey joined the National Guard in 1911. His unit served at the Mexican border in 1916. After World War I, he moved to the Army and became a captain in 1920.
